An Up to the Minute Snippet

Hi, everyone — Happy New Year!  All good wishes for a healthy & happy 2018.

Since I refuse to go outside unless it is 60 degrees outside (yes, I am a wimp and proud of it), I thought it would be a good idea to write a “Greetings” and get you up to speed on the latest newsy news in our temporarily very cold paradise.

First of all — I try not to write anything negative but I have to make an exception with this newsletter.  I am totally annoyed with the Naples Daily News…and for a number of reasons.   Our little local newspaper used to be half way decent and kept us current about goings on around town in a reasonably decent way.  Since USA Today took it over, the quality of the news is poorer, the amount of good information is substantially less — the Sports Section is almost non-existent — and the entire newspaper has become a USA Today mini-me ad magnet.  Now, effective January 1, the monthly subscription rate has been raised to an obscene $70.00.  I have been in touch with several of the businesses who advertise in the NDN to let them know how I feel.  I wonder if it will do any good.

PSA (PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT) — This coming weekend, January 5-7, the yearly pain-in-the-neck triathlon which has MANY participants will be taking place on Vanderbilt Beach, along Vanderbilt Beach Road and surrounding area.  BE PREPARED FOR TRAFFIC DELAYS IN AND ALONG THE TRIATHLON ROUTE.  :o(

I am sure a lot of you know or have been made aware that Paradise Wine in the Pavilion Shopping Center suddenly closed and disappeared….not sure what happened but as of last week, their phone was still hooked up.  Weird.

Naples annual pet parade, Pets on Third, will be held on Sunday, January 14, on Third Street South — in front of Tommy Bahama’s, Gattles, Sea Salt, etc.  The parade starts at 10 AM and concludes at Noon.  And again this year, the Master of Ceremonies will be none other than my beloved husband, Bob Harden!!  The event is really kind of fun and it is amazing to see how many folks actually participate and compete for prizes each year.

Now for some restaurant news — a new Japanese restaurant, Namba, will be opening in the Marketplace at Pelican Bay.  I have the opportunity to attend a tasting next Thursday and since they will be offering some vegan dishes, I am looking forward to that.

Dorona, the new sibling of Sea Salt and Barbatella, will be opening on January 18 at the former site of Midtown, across from the Coastland Mall and close to Food & Thought.

In Old Naples, La Trattoria will be opening in the space once occupied by La Bazene.  Peter Tierney, the owner of Bay House, is opening The Claw Bar in the spot once occupied by ZiZi’s in the Bellasera Hotel.  Sail Restaurant on the corner of 3rd and 5th should be open by the end of the month.  And finally…at least for this newsletter…Vergina on 5th will be rebranded to the name, Monticello….for reasons unknown to me.

Until more news breaks, stay warm during this little cold snap.  :o)

Cheers –
Linda
